Our Method: How We Work Towards Your Target Band

Every preparation plan starts with a diagnostic test: we measure where you stand in all four skills and shift lesson time towards the skills that come out weakest.

How we work

Four steps, each one built on the result of the step before.

A diagnostic test to start

Every student begins with an assessment that measures their current level in all four skills. Your plan is built on that real starting point.

A plan built around your target band

The weight given to Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking is set by the band score your university, visa or professional application requires.

Regular progress checks

Your Writing and Speaking get feedback against the official assessment criteria; progress is measured at every stage and the plan is updated.

Practice tests in the real format

Practice tests that follow the Academic or General Training format get you used to the pace of test day and to the question types you will meet.

What we measure, and how

Writing is assessed against its four official criteria: Task Achievement in Task 1 or Task Response in Task 2, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Speaking is assessed against Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Listening and Reading are measured question type by question type in timed practice tests, so you can see exactly where the marks go.

What an estimated band tells you

Practice tests and marked Writing come with an estimated band range. It is a reference point for your current level, not a guarantee of your official result. Its value lies in measuring each new attempt against the same yardstick, so you can see which skill, and which criterion, has moved since last time.

Our principles

We are as clear about what we don't promise as about what we do: we do not guarantee a particular band score. We base your preparation on these four principles instead.

  • Your preparation is planned from your measured level, not from an estimate.
  • Writing and Speaking are scored against the test's official assessment criteria (the band descriptors).
  • The Reading and Writing differences between Academic and General Training are built into your plan.
  • Your progress is reviewed regularly through practice tests and feedback.
