Short answer
IELTS for UKVI is the form of IELTS approved as a Secure English Language Test for UK visas. It must be taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre, and your visa route decides the test and the scores.
You need IELTS for UKVI when a UK visa or immigration application asks for a Secure English Language Test (SELT). IELTS for UKVI is the form of IELTS that UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) accepts for that purpose, and it must be taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre. Which UKVI test you take, and the score you need, depends on the visa route you are applying for.
This guide sets out the UKVI tests, the levels the main routes ask for as summarised by IELTS.org (as of October 2026), what is different on test day, and how to approach booking from Turkey. The rules themselves are set by the UK government and can change, so confirm the requirement for your route on GOV.UK before you book.
The IELTS tests UKVI accepts
According to IELTS.org, the tests used by UKVI are:
- IELTS for UKVI, in an Academic and a General Training version, assessing Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking with a band score for each.
- IELTS for UKVI Life Skills at A1, A2 or B1, a single test of speaking and listening only.
Life Skills works differently from every other IELTS test. It is not scored on bands: you receive a Pass or a Fail. Its tasks are based on everyday subjects such as work, transport and the weather, and IELTS.org describes it as the test for people who need to prove their speaking and listening ability for a UK visa, for example to remain with a family member already living in the UK permanently, to settle in the UK, or to become a British citizen.
What is different about IELTS for UKVI
IELTS.org puts the difference in how and where the test is taken:
- In person, at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre. UKVI only accepts tests taken in person at one of these centres, because it requires an additional layer of security. Make sure the centre you book with offers the UKVI test you need.
- Not online. IELTS Online, the at-home version of IELTS Academic, is not accepted for immigration purposes.
- Fully digital. In its March 2026 update on test delivery, IELTS.org says the SELT for UKVI purposes will only be available in the fully digital format, and the Writing on Paper option is not available to anyone taking an IELTS for UKVI test.
- Identity checks. UKVI has its own ID requirements for test day, published on GOV.UK. Bring the same identification document you used when booking.
- Its own terms. IELTS.org's general cancellation and transfer guidance tells UKVI test takers to follow the UKVI terms and conditions, which are specific to these tests.
Which test and which score for your route
UKVI states its requirements as levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and IELTS.org translates them into results. For the four-skill IELTS for UKVI test, you need at least:
- 4.0 in each component for routes that require B1 in four skills;
- 5.5 in each component for routes that require B2;
- 7.0 in each component for routes that require C1.
For routes that need A1, A2 or B1 in speaking and listening only, the requirement is a Pass in the IELTS for UKVI Life Skills test at that level. The word that matters is each: the UK government requires the minimum in every component, so a high overall band does not make up for one low section.
IELTS.org also publishes a table of routes, collated from GOV.UK and correct at its time of publication. A selection, as of October 2026:
| Route | CEFR level | Test and minimum result |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa, below degree level | B1 | IELTS for UKVI, at least 4.0 in each component |
| Student visa, degree level or above | Equivalent to B2 | IELTS or IELTS for UKVI, at least 5.5 in each component |
| Skilled Worker visa | B2 (B1 for those already on the route before 8 January 2026 who are only extending) | IELTS for UKVI, at least 5.5 in each component |
| Health and Care Worker visa | B2 (B1 for those already on the route before 8 January 2026 who are only extending) | IELTS for UKVI, at least 5.5 in each component |
| High Potential Individual visa | B2 for all new applicants from 8 January 2026 | IELTS for UKVI, at least 5.5 in each component |
| Family visa | A1 for a first application, A2 when extending, B1 for settlement | IELTS for UKVI Life Skills, Pass |
| Indefinite leave to remain; British citizenship | B1 | IELTS for UKVI Life Skills B1, Pass |
Two points are easy to miss. First, for a degree at a university that is a licensed student sponsor, IELTS.org's UK page says you must meet the English level set by the institution itself, and the table lists either IELTS or IELTS for UKVI, so your university's requirement is the one to check. Second, these levels are a summary of IELTS.org's table, not the full rules for any route.
Academic or General Training?
If your visa route or your university names a version, take that one. Otherwise, IELTS.org's general guidance on the two versions applies: choose Academic if you wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level or are seeking professional registration, and General Training if you wish to migrate to an English-speaking country such as the UK, or to train or study below degree level. For how the two versions differ in Reading and Writing, see our guide to IELTS Academic and our guide to IELTS General Training.
One Skill Retake and UKVI
IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit one of the four skills, once, within 60 days of a full IELTS on computer test, at centres that offer it. On UKVI, IELTS.org's wording is that UKVI is accepting One Skill Retake for IELTS Academic and General Training tests on computer in selected locations. If you are counting on it, confirm with your test centre that it is available for your UKVI booking before you sit the full test.
Booking IELTS for UKVI in Turkey
As of October 2026, IDP's Turkey site lists IELTS for UKVI among its tests, taken on computer. When you book:
- Choose the exact test your route requires: IELTS for UKVI Academic, IELTS for UKVI General Training, or Life Skills at the right level. A standard IELTS booking is not the same thing.
- Check that the centre and date you pick offer that UKVI test.
- Read the UKVI terms and the GOV.UK identity rules before test day.
The fee is set by the test provider, not by us; for how exam fees work in Turkey, see our page on the IELTS exam fee in Turkey.
Preparing when every component counts
Because UKVI routes set a minimum in each component, the way you prepare changes. An overall band can hide a weak skill; a UKVI requirement cannot. Find out early which of the four skills is furthest from the level you need, and give it the most time.
- Measure all four skills first. A full-length test under real timing shows where each one stands.
- Prepare for the right version. Use materials for the Academic or General Training version you are booked on.
- Practise on computer. UKVI tests are fully digital, so type your Writing answers and read on screen.
Our IELTS practice tests on this site are full IELTS Academic practice tests, not UKVI or Life Skills tests, and the first one, a free diagnostic test, gives you a band estimate for each skill.
